Young people’s priorities for Maryport South

Young people from Ewanrigg Juniors and The Lakes College have shared their views on what matters most to them as part of the Pride in Place programme in Maryport South. Through a series of workshops led by Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC), participants explored topics including transport, youth provision, community safety, green spaces and the town centre.

The engagement highlighted a strong desire for more affordable and reliable public transport, particularly to access education, employment and activities. Young people also called for sustainable investment in youth services, more inclusive activities, and greater support from trained youth workers.

Community safety was another key theme, with participants identifying concerns about antisocial behaviour, limited safe places to go, and the need for more welcoming community spaces. They also highlighted the importance of cleaner, better maintained parks and green spaces, alongside opportunities for local people to take pride in and improve their neighbourhoods.

Young people shared ideas for a more vibrant town centre, including a wider range of activities, places to meet friends and more opportunities to socialise. They also stressed the importance of ensuring facilities and outdoor spaces are accessible to everyone.

The findings from this engagement will help inform the Maryport South Community Investment Plan and ensure that the voices of young people play a meaningful role in shaping future investment decisions across the area.
