Pride in Place builds on more than a decade of neighbourhood-focused investment across the UK. These examples show the kind of change long-term, community-led programmes can deliver — and offer useful inspiration for Maryport South.
High street and public realm revival
In several earlier Towns Fund and Long-Term Plan for Towns areas, investment in shopfront improvements, better lighting, greener public spaces and safer walking routes has increased footfall and given residents more reasons to spend time locally. Communities consistently report that small, visible improvements — benches, planting, clearer signage — matter as much as larger capital projects.
Youth activities and community spaces
Neighbourhood boards have often prioritised safe, welcoming spaces for young people. Investment in refurbished community halls, youth clubs and sports facilities has been linked to lower anti-social behaviour and stronger community pride. Where funding is combined with revenue support for local coordinators, the impact tends to last well beyond the initial capital spend.
