Maryport South: Strong Communities, Proud Places and Opportunities for the Future
A new independent scoping report for the Pride in Place programme has been published, offering a detailed picture of Maryport South and the opportunities ahead for local communities. The report was produced by researchers from the University of Lancashire and Westlakes Research Limited: Dr Suzanne Wilson, Dr Katherine Jewell, Dr John Scanlan, Natasha Dawson, Dr Ursula Pool and Raeesa Jassat.
The research highlights both the challenges facing Maryport South and the many strengths that already exist across Maryport, Flimby, Ellenborough and Broughton Moor. While the area experiences higher levels of deprivation, poorer health outcomes and barriers relating to employment, income and education, the report also identifies strong community identity, active local organisations, valued community assets and a long history of residents coming together to improve their neighbourhoods.
One of the report’s key messages is that Maryport South's greatest assets are its people and places. From the coastline, countryside and green spaces to community halls, sports clubs, schools and local heritage, the area has a strong foundation on which to build. The report suggests that improving everyday places, strengthening connections between neighbourhoods, enhancing access to outdoor spaces and ensuring residents help shape decisions could have a lasting impact on wellbeing and community pride.
Importantly, the authors stress that this report is a starting point for conversation, not a blueprint for action. Residents remain the experts in their own communities, and Pride in Place will continue to work with local people to identify priorities and shape future investment.
